Sylvia Robinson, known as the "Mother of Hip Hop" for her work on the pioneering Sugar Hill Records label, has died at age 75.
Robinson had a long a varied career, first hitting the national charts as one half of the recording duo Mickey and Sylvia, which scored a major hit with "Love is Strange." It was over a decade later, in 1973, that she had her own #1 hit, with the sexy soul song, "Pillow Talk."
She later co-founded and was the head of Sugar Hill Records, which scored the first rap smash hit, "Rapper's Delight," by the Sugar Hill Gang. Sugar Hill remained a force in rap music for years to come.
Robinson was in all ways a music pioneer and one of the first women to truly break the glass ceiling that existing for success as a producer and executive in the music industry. Her place in music history is secure.

WOW I remember watching him when i was a kid and trying to talk like his faithful sidekick muffin the lil beaver with the stuffy soundy voices this dude is a DFW & a national Icon. A man i wanted that suit he wears so bad man i use to think it was so dope and still do.
DALLAS — Few broadcasters had a bigger impact on North Texas than Jerry Haynes, who has died at age 84.
He died Monday morning from complications due to Parkinson's Disease.
For an astounding 35 years, his iconic "Mr. Peppermint" character enthralled children and their parents. He led the longest running locally-produced show in WFAA's history, with more than 6,000 episodes.
Haynes was also an accomplished character actor who appeared in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Places in the Heart," "Robo Cop" and "Boys Don't Cry." He starred in a variety of TV movies and shows as well, among them: "Dallas" and "Walker, Texas Ranger."
Haynes began his career as a program announcer, then hosted variety and teen dance shows in the 1950s, including "Dallas Bandstand." He filled in for the legendary Dick Clark on his "American Bandstand" network program.
Haynes was an eyewitness to history. He was present at Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas on November 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
He dashed four blocks to the WFAA studio to be among the first to describe the scene to incredulous viewers.
"I ran back as quick as I could," Haynes said in a 2008 interview. "I was 34 years old, so I was a sprinter. [On the way] I heard a lady say 'Oh my Lord, they killed him!.'"
It was more than two years earlier that he began the show that would make him a household name in North Texas.
"It turned into a career because I would have been long gone a long time ago," he said during a Mr. Peppermint tribute on "Good Morning Texas."
Through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, generations of Texas children grew up watching Mr. Peppermint and his gang of sidekicks, especially Muffin, the beloved puppet creation of sidekick Vern Dailey.
Always wearing his red-and-white suit, straw hat and carrying a candy-striped cane (an idea he borrowed from "The Music Man"), Haynes bridged the times from black-and-white to color to special effects.
But in the mid-90s, as children's shows faded to video games and the Internet, and with Haynes approaching age 70, Mr. Peppermint hung up the familiar hat and cane in a TV special marking his retirement.
"One of my family's favorite places to travel has been 'Peppermint Place,'" said then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush in a tribute broadcast during the retirement special.
Haynes would later be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and he slipped from public eye.
But he'll never be far from the minds of his millions of fans, young and old.
"I want to remind you: Sometimes things don't go too well and you're not feeling a real good mood," Mr. Peppermint reminded his young viewers. "When you feel unhappy, nothing seems worthwhile. Just give yourself a peppermint grin, and you will wear a smile."

DALLAS (AP) — Arch West, a retired Frito-Lay marketing executive credited with creating Doritos as the first national tortilla chip brand, has died in Dallas at age 97.
A statement issued by the West family says he died Tuesday at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. A graveside service is scheduled for Oct. 1. Daughter Jana Hacker of Allen tells The Dallas Morning News (http://dallasne.ws/qzPm9E) the family plans on "tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn."
West was a marketing vice president for Dallas-based Frito-Lay in 1961 when, while on a family vacation near San Diego, he found a snack shack selling fried tortilla chips. Hacker says her father got a tepid corporate response to the tortilla chip idea but conducted marketing research that led to the Doritos rollout.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Former Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Orlando "Zeus" Brown was found dead Friday at his Baltimore home. He was 40.
The cause of death wasn't known.
Fire spokesman Battalion Chief Kevin Cartwright said firefighters were called about 11 a.m. Friday because Brown was unresponsive at his home near the Inner Harbor. Cartwright said Brown was dead when firefighters arrived.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said firefighters called police, routine procedure in such cases. He said there were no signs of trauma or suspicious activity.
The Ravens learned of Brown's death during practice.
"We send our condolences to the family of Orlando Brown," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "Everybody knew what he meant to this organization. We're forever grateful for what he did for the present team. We can't express enough sorrow for his loss."
Brown began his career with the Cleveland Browns in 1993 and played twice for that team, as well as the Ravens, ending his NFL playing days in 2005.
Ravens director of player development Harry Swayne, Brown's former teammate and fellow tackle, called Brown "a big old puppy dog with a little bit of a bark.
"He had a lot of friends around the league. He was one of the best guys. It's a tough loss."
Brown always will be remembered for shoving official Jeff Triplette in a 1999 game between Cleveland and Jacksonville.
Brown was suspended for knocking down Triplette after the official threw a weighted penalty flag that accidentally struck the massive tackle in the right eye. The 6-foot-7, 350-pounder stormed onto the field and pushed Triplette.
Brown, whose father was blind from glaucoma, said concern for his eyesight caused him to confront Triplette. Brown was hospitalized for six days with bleeding behind the eye, and the NFL suspended him for two weeks.
He missed the next three seasons because of the injury, returning to football and the Ravens for the 2003 season.
Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs played with Brown for three seasons.
"It's disturbing, man," Suggs said. "We don't even know the cause of death. It's just sad. He was a beast on the field and a gentle giant off of it. It's just very unfortunate that he had to leave us so young. My heart goes out to his family."

According to her listing in Wikipedia, Williams in 1963 in Coshocton, Ohio. She was originally credited by her full name, but she has also been billed as Vesta since the 1990s.
Although Williams never had any albums certified gold and never had any Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, she scored seven Top 20 R&B hits from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s.

That's right! Today marks the one year anniversary of MTV featuring my video for my single, "P-00" on RapFix Live, which was hosted by the legendary Sway Calloway. Those who know me have witnessed how the featuring of my video greatly impacted my life on this day in 2010. Those who really know me also know that I am very sentimental and value things like this.

I just wanted to take a lil time out to let everybody remember this day, and let Sway Calloway know that a brother like me representing underground hiphop from Dallas, Texas appreciates him for giving me that exposure. It means alot. I look at MTV Rapfix Live now, and will always feel that I became a part of its groundbreaking movement. Since P-00 was featured, I have kept up with the show's innovative additions like the Get In The Game Artist that were promoted Live thru Skype. The show has truly grown. THANK YOU Sway for showing love to my good friends, and two of the DOPEST emcees the world will ever hear, Vicious Cycle's very own "Money Stax" and Neeky Devero who were featured on the segment with Pusha T. THANK YOU for putting my boy J.Rhodes on RapFix in the episode with David Banner & 9th Wonder. God it means alot. Down here in Dallas/Fort Worth, the hiphop scene falls upon deaf ears much of the time, so we seriously appreciate that. And Fabolous, if you're reading this, THANK YOU for peeping out my video, and recognizing my eccentric, unequaled approach to hip hop, and stating that I am indeed different. That is very important to me, and maybe one day you will be exposed to more of my artistry. I went over alot of people's heads with my lyrics in the P-00 video, and many still do not even realize it to this very day. I like to challenge people to decipher what I was actually saying. That video was only scratching the surface of what all I can do. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

"Spartacus" actor Andy Whitfield has died, CNN has confirmed. Fans of Starz Entertainment's original drama "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" know Whitfield as the titular gladiator.
According to the New York Times, the 39-year-old passed away on Sunday in Sydney, Australia from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Whitfield leaves behind his wife, Vashti, two children, and a sister.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement.
“We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in 'Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life," Albrecht continued. "Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”
"Spartacus" creator Steven DeKnight shared his thoughts on Twitter, writing, "No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother."
Whitfield rose to stardom on the Starz series, but took what was intended to be a temporary hiatus following a check-up in March of 2010, the NYT reports. Starz ended up using a variety of actors for a prequel, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" as they waited for Whitfield to return, but he never became well enough to do so.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre was tapped to fill the lead for the second season. At the time, McIntyre commended Whitfield for his work on the show, and said that "everybody hurts that he's had to give up that role, myself included."
Whitfield's co-stars are chiming in with their condolences as well. In a statement on her fan site, "Spartacus" actress (and former "Xena" star) Lucy Lawless is quoted as saying that "Obviously, Andy Whitfield left an indelible mark on all of us in the 'Spartacus' family."
"He was a gentle man who never said a bad word about anyone, a gifted photographer, engineer (no really!) and a brilliant actor," the statement said. "Andy's incandescent film presence made men want to be him and women want to marry him. Andy's two babies will always know that their Daddy cherished them and their mother, Vashti, above all things. How lucky we were to have him grace all our lives. Godspeed, Andy!"
