For original MTV VJ Mark Goodman, the news that music network is celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend is hard to fathom. "It's freaking weird," he tells Rolling Stone. "I've lived like three lifetimes since then. It's just so long ago, and yet it also seems like yesterday. It's a weird number – and it's hard to believe that we're still talking about this 30 years down the road."
MTV launched on August 1st, 1981 at 12:01 a.m. The first images broadcast were the launch of the Apollo 11, followed by a video for the Buggles song "Video Killed The Radio Star." The network has gone through countless permutations since then, but this weekend VH1 Classic will commemorate MTV's founding with a three-day marathon of footage from the 1980s, including a re-broadcast of the network's first hour, starting Saturday at 6 a.m.
Mark Goodman was a 28-year-old disc jockey when he auditioned for the new network in 1981. "During one of the auditions I had to interview Robert Morton – who went on to produce David Letterman's show – as he pretended to be Billy Joel," says Goodman. "He was just being a total fucking asshole on purpose to make it the worst possible interview. In another round, I had to talk to the audience about the Eagles, whose photos were pasted up on a poster board on an easel."
In the earliest days, MTV was only available in a limited number of cities. When they launched, the VJs had to travel to New Jersey to watch it because even New York cable companies didn't offer it. "Part of the job was to hang out with cable operators and convince them to pick up MTV," Goodman says. "Within six months we started getting these stories back from small towns in the Midwest and in the South where people were going into record stores and asking for the Buggles, who had been off the shelves for about three years by 1981. I also remember doing an appearance in Cheyenne, Wyoming at a record store where thousands of people showed up. I said, 'What's going on?' They said, 'You.' I was completely blown away, and I said, 'Okay, it's working.'"
It took a little while for all the major artists to begin making videos. "I think we only had 300 videos at first," Goodman says. "Which is why you saw Andrew Gold every few hours. We also had lots of Rod Stewart, and even acts like Charlie Daniels. One of the early success stories was Duran Duran. We started playing 'Planet Earth' early on and it got them wide exposure. We started to hear about British bands coming to the States and being shocked by how many people showed up."
The new platform served as a tremendous boost to the record industry. "We sort of propped it up when there was kind of an indulgence in the industry," says Goodman. "We were coming off Saturday Night Fever in 1979 and the industry had this gigantic bubble and then things got awful quiet. We came along just in time and revitalized things, or at least opened people up to more music."
Goodman left the network in 1988, but has returned periodically for specials. He recently hosted a variety of shows on VH1 Classic. MTV had a huge celebration for its 20th anniversary in 2001, and reunited all five of the original VJs at a concert special in New York. "As far as I know, MTV isn't doing anything in particular to celebrate the 30th," Goodman says. "MTV doesn't want people to think about how friggin' old they are. The people watching now were so, so not born when we launched. They were light years away from being born."
Original VJ JJ Jackson died in 2004, but the other four do regular work for Sirius XM. "This weekend, me and Nina Blackwood and Alan Hunter and Martha Quinn are going in the same studio," Goodman says., "We're going to recreate, musically, the first five hours of MTV. And we're going to tell stories from the old days, and people like Rick Springfiefld, Nick Rhodes and Eddie Money are going to stop by to talk about their earliest impressions of MTV."
Despite his deep history with MTV, Goodman admits that he hardly watches it these days. "I have no interest in stuff like Jersey Shore," he says. "I have an 18-year-old daughter and I have watched other shows with her, but it's not for me. I'm 30 years past the demo."

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment today according to numerous reports. The UK singer was 27-year-old.
A press release from Metropolitan Police does not specify Winehouse by name, but reads
"Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05 hours today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.
On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inquiries continue into the circumstances of death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."
Winhouse cancelled her European tour last month, and has long struggled with substance abuse.
Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that was considered a through-back to the Motown days of music.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back in Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years filled by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father Mitch told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps – not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."

Ryan Dunn, the 34-year-old "Jackass" star, died in a fatal car crash on Sunday night in Pennsylvania, MTV News confirmed Monday (June 20).
According to police, the accident occurred at 3 a.m. on Route 322 and New Street in West Goshen Township. While it's unknown who was driving at the time, an unidentified passenger also died in the crash. April Margera, the mother of Dunn's "Jackass" co-star Bam, broke the news to WMMR 93.3's "Preston and Steve" radio show.
"We are devastated by the tragic loss of Ryan Dunn — a beloved member of the MTV family for more than a decade," Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music/Film Group, said in a statement. "He made us all laugh and had the tireless enthusiastic approach to life of your favorite middle school friend. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ryan's family and friends. The Jackass brotherhood will never be the same."
In the last photo Dunn posted to Twitter, he and two friends are seen drinking what may be alcoholic beverages. TMZ also reported that the car caught fire in the crash. A tow truck was later sent to the scene to remove the car. A photo obtained by an NBC affiliate in Pennsylvania, showed the wrecked car on the side of the road. As of press time, no further information was known about the accident.
Born in Ohio, Dunn grew up in New York, before moving to West Chester, Pennsylvania, where he would hook up with Bam's CKY Crew. He kicked off his career doing crazy stunts and skateboard tricks in a series of online videos, which eventually led to his part in MTV's "Jackass" in 2000. The daredevil was a key member of the crew, appearing in "Jackass" spin-offs like "Viva La Bam" and "Bam's Unholy Union," as Bam's sidekick and often acting as the voice of reason within the zany crew. He also had his own a short-lived home improvement show on MTV called "Homewreckers" in 2005. Dunn's new show "Proving Ground," in which he and co-host Jessica Chobot test out action sequences from TV, games and movies, premiered on G4 last Tuesday.
When MTV News sat down with the "Jackass" crew last year, they named Dunn's first stunt for the show as one of their favorites in 10 years of the TV show and movies. "I loved when [Bam Margera] made Ryan jump into the poo factory, the 'Poo Dive' I think we called it," creator Jeff Tremaine said. " 'Cause that was horrible, but the best part was ... revealing his tattoos that we didn't know about. That was the first time we ever met Ryan."
He appeared in all three "Jackass" flicks and even took a stab at Hollywood, with a role in non-"Jackass" projects like the Jessica Simpson flick "Blonde Ambition" and on the NBC procedural staple "Law & Order: SVU."
Last year, Jackass 3D" found overwhelming box-office success, raking in $50 million in its first week. "Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie" just hit stores last week, revealing more stunts that didn't make it into the blockbuster film.

That's right The Dallas Texas underground hiphop scene has been placed in the national spotlight 3 times this year courtesy of the new groundbreaking show MTV New RapFix Live with Host the legendary Sway Calloway of the Wake up show. The whole mission of this show is to interview the hottest major mc's and lyricst in the rap game every week on Rapfix.mtv.com and Sway being the musical mastermind he is found a way of giving back by having a segment during this highly popular show called Get In The Game Where the major artist who are booked on RapFix Live take a listen to a video from an up & coming artist in the game. And that's where PiKaHsSo, Vicious Cycle, & J.Rhodes come in to this lovely and vivid picture. All 3 of these artist where featured on MTV News Rapfix Get in the Game Segment but the beauty of it all is that they all hail from Dallas, Texas a city not primarily known for birthing emcees.
The last & most prominent mc from Dallas that is know world wide for his lyrical prowess is none other than Dr. Dre protege The D.O.C. who's from West Dallas and not to be looked over for her lyrical skills neo soul Queen Erykah Badu. I took it upon myself as an elder statesmen of the Dallas underground hiphop scene to let the world know our contributions, to let the people see that Dallas does have a viable and potent underground scene that has been ignored and shall be heard. Now im by no means a professional writter im just a eccentric artist from the Dallas metroplex who has a love you could never fathom for my city and this is my way of showing some of that love. So excuse the gramatical errors and misspellings and just feel the vibe of what is some of what Dallas Texas underground music scene has to offer. Lil Waynewill have to wait an additional day before he returns home, a Rikers Island corrections officer told MTV News on Thursday morning (November 4). The superstar rapper was expected to be released around 1 a.m. but apparently needs to ride out one more day before he is a free man.
His time was miscalculated. He owed, he owes one day of 'good time,' so it's gonna be another night," Officer Carl Carabello said Thursday as MTV News awaited the New Orleans lyricist's release outside the rapper's jail. Carabello added that "good time" is reduced when an inmate runs into trouble behind bars. "If you get an infraction in jail, they'll take away 'good time' — time that you accumulated for good behavior."
Although the officer did not confirm what may have caused the delay of Weezy's release, it is possible that a May incident in which the MC was caught with headphones and an MP3 player, which is a violation of prison rules, may have come into play. Carabello said Wayne would be released "probably tomorrow" (Friday, November 5). A spokesperson for Rikers Island Correctional Facility, Officer Daniels, confirmed to MTV News that Weezy remains in prison but was unable to comment on when the rapper may be released or whether his time was extended due to an infraction.
Young Money President Mack Maine stopped by the MTV News offices Wednesday and revealed that Weezy would celebrate his homecoming with a party Sunday at a Miami strip club. According to Maine, Wayne's musical family plans to "just treat him like a king, like the royalty that he is and make him feel like we really missed him and welcome him back to the family, basically." The party follows Drake's Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour stop Saturday in Las Vegas, a show at which both Maine and Drizzy have hinted Wayne may make a surprise appearance.
