Detroit Record Store Owner Returns J DiLLA's Unheard Material To Ma Dukes

Share
man this is some good news i know how important it is as a artist to hold on to those artifacts and treasure them and not just throw them away man im glad DiLLA's Mother got them back... and big ups to the Record store owner for having a good heart... PiKaHsSo (AllHipHop News) Fans around the world will now have the chance to hear new, previously unheard material by J.Dilla, thanks to a record store owner in Detroit, who discovered hundreds lost tapes and other material created by the producer.

Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey is now in possession of hundreds of tapes created and produced by her son J. Dilla, who died of February 10, 2006 from Lupus. The treasure trove of J.Dilla material was found by Jeff Bubeck, who owns the Royal Oak-based record store UHF. Bubeck was cleaning out an abandoned storage unit storage he took control of, when he found over 7,000-8,000 records, notebooks, notes and other handwritten artifacts by J.Dilla.

In an exclusive Q&A with AllHipHop.com, Ms. Yancey revealed that Bubeck declined offers from around the world to sell J.Dilla’s material and returned a box of original beat tapes, letters and other items. “It was overwhelming to see this handwriting again and to see how he marked his records, with his silver marker,” Ms. Yancey told AllHipHop.com. “That was his favorite color, the silver marker. According to Ms. Yancey, J. Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey, left to record in California, but before he left, he wanted to sell over 20,000 albums from his collection. Jonathan Taylor, who is the business manager for The J.Dilla Foundation, said that the producer’s collection simply became scattered after his death. “He chose which ones [records] he wanted,” Taylor told AllHipHop.com.

“He took the ones he wanted and those that were left, were from eight years ago.” Ms. Yancey and Jonathan Taylor wanted to express their gratitude to Jeff Bubeck for returning the material and not thinking about a turning a profit off of the valuable material that he discovered. “He is my hero. He truly is,” Ms. Yancey told AllHipHop.com of Bubeck. “It was really good to be with him and to see him and to see the type of person he was. He just broke down, because he’s a remarkable father and understood.” Check back tomorrow on Allhiphop.com for a full Q&A with Ms. Yancey and Jonathan Taylor of the J.Dilla Foundation. J DiLLA's Personal Record Collection Being Sold In Detroit Record Store

Share
when i saw this on PitchFork last night i didnt know what to say or think man u would think his family would have access to this priceless stuff 1st. Read on i got this from the Detroit Press At first, they were just crates full of records, numbering in the thousands. But after digging through their contents, Jeff Bubeck learned he'd stumbled upon something special: what he says is the personal record collection of late Detroit hip-hop producer J Dilla. Bubeck, one of the owners of Royal Oak record store UHF, is selling the records in his store. They come with yellow tags that identify them as part of Dilla's personal stash. "Is it even possible?" That was Bubeck's first reaction when he learned the 7,000-8,000 records he acquired from an abandoned storage unit in Clinton Township last month may have belonged to Dilla, the celebrated producer and founding member of Slum Village who died in 2006 at age 32 due to complications from lupus.

When first digging through the crates, amid the mountains of 94-cent Earth, Wind & Fire LPs, Bubeck noticed a box of cassette tapes, labeled in black marker as "Jaydee Beats." There were also lyric booklets, along with magazines and pieces of junk mail addressed to James Yancey, as well as to his parents, Beverly and Maureen Yancey. The names didn't ring a bell with Bubeck. But when he punched Yancey's name into a Google search on a whim, two and two came together. "It was pretty shocking," says Bubeck, who has been buying and selling records for years. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me?'" Dilla was a notorious crate digger, scooping up albums by the caseload to scour for obscure beats and samples. So while many of the records in the collection are dollar-bin throwaways, there are some, including titles from 1970s Detroit jazz label Tribe Records, that have significant value, Bubeck says.

After his find, Bubeck reached out to Stones Throw Records, the Los Angeles-based record label that Dilla recorded for in his later years. He plans to share part of the proceeds from the sales of the records with the J Dilla Foundation, though Bubeck says his attempts to contact both Dilla's mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, and the foundation have been unsuccessful. Detroit News attempts to reach Maureen Yancey were unsuccessful, as well. For now, Bubeck is still combing through the boxes of records, and UHF is putting them on sale several at a time. When Record Store Day was celebrated on Saturday, the first batch of Dilla records hit the shelves, and fans were excited to get their hands on them.

"A lot of people were saying, 'I just want one record that was his," says Scott Hagen, one of UHF's owners. "They just want to own something that once belonged to Dilla."

Suge Knight Says He Will Beat Rick Ross Ass

Share
lol In a recent interview, Suge Knight said he had beef with Maybach Music CEO Rick Ross because of the rapper’s decision to put out a track about the late Tupac called ‘Tupac Back.’ The Death Row Records founder explained that he wasn’t too happy about Ross’ choice of associates, although he couldn’t help praising the rapper’s musical talent. Suge Knight explained that he had respect for Ricky Rozay’s music but said that he couldn’t get behind the Maybach Music CEO’s decision to put out a track about Tupac while maintaining ties to Diddy, who the Knight blames for the killing of Shakur. “I can’t sit up here and say I’m bitter to Rick Ross, ‘cus like anybody else, we don’t know Rick Ross. That’s a guy who uses somebody else’s name. This guy comes from being a correctional officer. I don’t got nothing negative [against him] personally, I just feel like he do good music, and you can’t take that from him. That boy got bars, he’s gonna write…at the same time, I feel like there’s a line you cross, and Rick Ross crossed that line. If you’re gonna be with guy [Diddy] who killed Tupac, you can’t go turn around and do a record [called] ‘Tupac Back’…Rick Ross is a grown ass n*gga,” Knight told 93.5′s Tattoo and Cee Cee. The former Death Row Records head honcho added that he was willing to back up his opinion about Ross with action if the two should ever cross paths and outright threatened the MMG rapper. “I’ll beat the dog shit out of Rick Ross for manipulating these people out here,” said Knight. Suge went on to suggest that they could set up an Ultimate Fighting style competition where the loser would be required to permanently shave off their beard, but added that he wasn’t interested in running a publicity stunt as he is not a rapper. Ross has yet to issue a response to Knight’s threats, or accept his challenge to take up Suge’s comments in the ring. Rest iN Peace DFW Blues Legend Pops Carter

Rest in peace to a DFW icon repping Denton, Tejas this is very sad know & respect your history. i will be dedicating our DFW Hiphop History Facebook page to him. CLicK HERE to peep

PiKaHsSo

This article by Robert Wilonsky Dallas News

The emails and Facebook messages began trickling in early this morning with the sad news: Pops Carter is dead. The Louisiana-born bluesman -- or soul man or, perhaps most appropriately, funkmonster -- was 92. But, of course, those who saw him perform 'round town, in Denton and Dallas and points in between, knew him to be an ageless wonder. Here he is performing at his 90th birthday party; men half his age couldn't keep up, and shouldn't even bother trying.

He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and, so the story goes, moved to Houston when he was 12, where he began performing with the big bands and in time the small revues. Close to 40 years later he landed in Denton, thanks to a construction job, and stayed. He would play with legends and comers alike -- anyone capable of a good time. In time he became as integral to Denton's music scene as the B flat; the short doc above, made by Ashley Beane and Rachel Horvath in 2008, will give you some sense why.

The first time I really experienced Carter was at Fry Street Fair in '94, a performance immortalized on long-out-of-print collection released on VIP Records out of Denton; he fit right in amongst the likes of Earl Harvin, Kenny Withrow, Funland, Vibrolux and the Grown-Ups -- kids who rocked, but not quite as hard as the old man who showed them how to get it done. On his Facebook page this morning, KXT's Paul Slavens, himself a mighty musical force. offers this touching farewell: "Pops. Another little bit of my old Denton world has passed onto the next world. He was making the scene and hitting on young things last time I saw him, which was not that long ago. You touched a lot of peoples hearts, mine included. Rest easy, man."

Judge Makes Drunk Driver Wear Sign With Victims Photo On It

Share
Michael Giacona, 39, was recently released from serving a 90 day prison term for the charges of killing someone while driving intoxicated. He is set to serve a two year probation sentence, where he will be monitored for alcohol consumption by wearing an ankle monitor. The most justifying part of his sentence comes from the sign he is being forced to wear for four consecutive Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the scene where he ran a red light and killed 20-year-old Aaron Coy Pennywell. He will also have to keep a displayed framed picture of his victim in his home. The sign he is being forced to wear states: "I Killed Aaron Coy Pennywell While Driving Drunk" Judge Michael R. Fields, who sentenced Giacona, gave these reasons for making Giacona wear the sign in public: "Mr. Giacona, I have considered what the witnesses had to say. I have looked at the state's exhibits and, and quite frankly, I am concerned about you and this decision to place you on shock probation. You make me nervous, and the reason you make me nervous is I believe what the witnesses said about your behavior that evening: That you were, even after killing someone, still looking to get more alcohol. This is not your first DWI." Aaron Pennywell's mother Kaye Pennywell has said that she has created a makeshift memorial where her son was killed, and she will be present at the tragic street for the four consecutive Saturdays to make sure Mr. Giacona follows through with his sentence. Rest iN Peace TV iCON Dick Clark Dead @ 82

Share

Dick Clark died earlier today. The famed TV producer was 82.

Paul Shefrin, a rep for the entertainment legend, told ABC News his client suffered a "massive heart attack."
The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native, who was born Richard Wagstaff Clark, became a breakout star after being tapped to host “American Bandstand,” an afternoon dance show for teenagers, which debuted nationally in 1957. He went on to form his own production company and put out many popular shows, from the hidden camera series "TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes" to game show "$25,000 Pyramid." He also produced many TV award shows, including the Golden Globes.

[Related: Dick Clark’s ‘Rockin’ New Year’s Eve’ just turned 40]

In 1972, he hosted "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" for the first time, helping Americans countdown to midnight as the ball dropped in New York's Times Square. He continued to helm the special until 2004 when he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed and unable to speak. After Regis Philbin stood in for him the first year, Clark passed the baton to "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest and, after recovering, made an annual appearance to address the audience.

Clark's first time back in 2006, he had the same boyish spirit people had grown to know. Although he clearly struggled with his speech, sounding hoarse and sometimes indecipherable, he candidly addressed the audience, saying: "Last year I had a stroke. It left me in bad shape. I had to teach myself how to walk and talk again. It's been a long, hard fight. My speech is not perfect but I'm getting there." Noting, "I wouldn't have missed this for the world."

Following the news of Clark's death, Seacrest offered condolences. "I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark, he tweeted. "He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Other celebrities expressed their sadness over the passing of Clark as well. Jenny McCarthy, who appeared on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," tweeted: “RIP dick Clark. You were amazing to work with. U will be missed. Xxxoo.” Joan Rivers chimed in, writing: “Very sad to hear about Dick Clark. What a great life. What a great career. Relevant until the end. He will be missed!” Even Snoop Dogg remembered the TV man, posting: “REST IN PEACE to the DICK CLARK!! U were pioneer n a good man!! Thank u sir.”

Clark is survived by his three children and his third wife, Keri Wigton, to whom he has been married since 1977.

Rest iN Peace Mike Wallace Of 60 Minutes Dead @ 93 Years Old

Share

NEW YORK (AP) — CBS newsman Mike Wallace, the dogged, merciless reporter and interviewer who took on politicians, celebrities and other public figures in a 60-year career highlighted by the on-air confrontations that helped make "60 Minutes" the most successful primetime television news program ever, has died. He was 93.

Wallace died Saturday night, CBS spokesman Kevin Tedesco said.
Until he was slowed by heart surgery as he neared his 90th birthday in 2008, Wallace continued making news, doing "60 Minutes" interviews with such subjects as Jack Kevorkian and Roger Clemens. He had promised to still do occasional reports when he announced his retirement as a regular correspondent in March 2006.

Wallace said then that he had long vowed to retire "when my toes turn up" and "they're just beginning to curl a trifle. ... It's become apparent to me that my eyes and ears, among other appurtenances, aren't quite what they used to be."
Among his later contributions, after bowing out as a regular, was a May 2007 profile of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, and an interview with Kevorkian, the assisted suicide doctor released from prison in June 2007 who died June 3, 2011, at age 83.

In December 2007, Wallace landed the first interview with Clemens after the star pitcher was implicated in the Mitchell report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball. The interview, in which Clemens maintained his innocence, was broadcast in early January 2008.
Wallace was the first man hired when late CBS news producer Don Hewitt put together the staff of "60 Minutes" at its inception in 1968. The show wasn't a hit at first, but it worked its way up to the top 10 in the 1977-78 season and remained there, season after season, with Wallace as one of its mainstays. Among other things, it proved there could be big profits in TV journalism.
The top 10 streak was broken in 2001, in part due to the onset of huge-drawing rated reality shows. But "60 Minutes" remained in the top 25 in recent years, ranking 15th in viewers in the 2010-11 season.

The show pioneered the use of "ambush interviews," with reporter and camera crew corralling alleged wrongdoers in parking lots, hallways, wherever a comment — or at least a stricken expression — might be harvested from someone dodging the reporters' phone calls.
Such tactics were phased out over time — Wallace said they provided drama but not much good information.

And his style never was all about surprise, anyway. Wallace was a master of the skeptical follow-up question, coaxing his prey with a "forgive me, but ..." or a simple, "come on." He was known as one who did his homework, spending hours preparing for interviews, and alongside the exposes, "60 Minutes" featured insightful talks with celebrities and world leaders.
He was equally tough on public and private behavior. In 1973, with the Watergate scandal growing, he sat with top Nixon aide John Ehrlichman and read a long list of alleged crimes, from money laundering to obstructing justice. "All of this, Wallace noted, "by the law and order administration of Richard Nixon."

The surly Ehrlichman could only respond: "Is there a question in there somewhere?"
In the early 1990s, Wallace reduced Barbra Streisand to tears as he scolded her for being "totally self-absorbed" when she was young and mocked her decades of psychoanalysis. "What is it she is trying to find out that takes 20 years?" Wallace said he wondered.
"I'm a slow learner," Streisand told him.
His late colleague Harry Reasoner once said, "There is one thing that Mike can do better than anybody else: With an angelic smile, he can ask a question that would get anyone else smashed in the face."

Wallace said he didn't think he had an unfair advantage over his interview subjects: "The person I'm interviewing has not been subpoenaed. He's in charge of himself, and he lives with his subject matter every day. All I'm armed with is research."
Wallace himself became a dramatic character in several projects, from the stage version of "Frost/Nixon," when he was played by Stephen Rowe, to the 1999 film "The Insider," based in part on a 1995 "60 Minutes" story about tobacco industry whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand, who accused Brown & Williamson of intentionally adding nicotine to cigarettes. Christopher Plummer starred as Wallace and Russell Crowe as Wigand. Wallace was unhappy with the film, in which he was portrayed as caving to pressure to kill a story about Wigand.

Operating on a tip, The New York Times reported that "60 Minutes" planned to excise Wigand's interview from its tobacco expose. CBS said Wigand had signed a nondisclosure agreement with his former company, and the network feared that by airing what he had to say, "60 Minutes" could be sued along with him.

The day the Times story appeared, Wallace downplayed the gutted story as "a momentary setback." He soon sharpened his tone. Leading into the revised report when it aired, he made no bones that "we cannot broadcast what critical information about tobacco, addiction and public health (Wigand) might be able to offer." Then, in a "personal note," he told viewers that he and his "60 Minutes" colleagues were "dismayed that the management at CBS had seen fit to give in to perceived threats of legal action."

The full report eventually was broadcast.
Wallace maintained a hectic pace after CBS waived its long-standing rule requiring broadcasters to retire at 65. In early 1999, at age 80, he added another line to his resume by appearing on the network's spinoff, "60 Minutes II." (A similar concession was granted Wallace's longtime colleague, Don Hewitt, who in 2004, at age 81, relinquished his reins as executive producer; he died in 2009.)
Wallace amassed 21 Emmy awards during his career, as well as five DuPont-Columbia journalism and five Peabody awards.

In all, his television career spanned six decades, much of it spent at CBS. In 1949, he appeared as Myron Wallace in a show called "Majority Rules." In the early 1950s, he was an announcer and game show host for programs such as "What's in a Word?" He also found time to act in a 1954 Broadway play, "Reclining Figure," directed by Abe Burrows.

In the mid-1950s came his smoke-wreathed "Night Beat," a series of one-on-one interviews with everyone from an elderly Frank Lloyd Wright to a young Henry Kissinger that began on local TV in New York and then appeared on the ABC network. It was the show that first brought Wallace fame as a hard-boiled interviewer, a "Mike Malice" who rarely gave his subjects any slack.
Wrote Coronet magazine in 1957: "Wallace's interrogation had the intensity of a third degree, often the candor of a psychoanalytic session. Nothing like it had ever been known on TV. ... To Wallace, no guest is sacred, and he frankly dotes on controversy."

Sample "Night Beat" exchange, with colorful restaurateur Toots Shor. Wallace: "Toots, why do people call you a slob?" Shor: "Me? Jiminy crickets, they 'musta' been talking about Jackie Gleason."

In those days, Wallace said, "interviews by and large were virtual minuets. ... Nobody dogged, nobody pushed." He said that was why "Night Beat" ''got attention that hadn't been given to interview broadcasts before."

It was also around then that Wallace did a bit as a TV newsman in the 1957 Hollywood drama "A Face in the Crowd," which starred Andy Griffith as a small-town Southerner who becomes a political phenomenon through his folksy television appearances. Two years later, Wallace helped create "The Hate That Hate Produced," a highly charged program about the Nation of Islam that helped make a national celebrity out of Malcolm X and was later criticized as biased and inflammatory.
After holding a variety of other news and entertainment jobs, including serving as advertising pitchman for a cigarette brand, Wallace became a full-time newsman for CBS in 1963.
He said it was the death of his 19-year-old son, Peter, in an accident in 1962 that made him decide to stick to serious journalism from then on. (Another son, Chris, followed his father and became a broadcast journalist, most recently as a Fox News Channel anchor.)
Wallace had a short stint reporting from Vietnam, and took a sock in the jaw while covering the tumultuous 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. But he didn't fit the stereotype of the Eastern liberal journalist. He was a close friend of the Reagans and was once offered the job of Richard Nixon's press secretary. He called his politics moderate.

One "Night Beat" interview resulted in a libel suit, filed by a police official angry over remarks about him by mobster Mickey Cohen. Wallace said ABC settled the lawsuit for $44,000, and called it the only time money had been paid to a plaintiff in a suit in which he was involved.
The most publicized lawsuit against him was by retired Gen. William C. Westmoreland, who sought $120 million for a 1982 "CBS Reports" documentary, "The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception." Westmoreland dropped the libel suit in February 1985 after a long trial. Lawyers for each side later said legal costs of the suit totaled $12 million, of which $9 million was paid by CBS.
Wallace once said the case brought on depression that put him in the hospital for more than a week. "Imagine sitting day after day in the courtroom hearing yourself called every vile name imaginable," he said.

In 1996, he appeared before the Senate's Special Committee on Aging to urge more federal funds for depression research, saying that he had felt "lower, lower, lower than a snake's belly" but had recovered through psychiatry and antidepressant drugs. He later disclosed that he once tried to commit suicide during that dark period. Wallace, columnist Art Buchwald and author William Styron were friends who commiserated often enough about depression to call themselves "The Blues Brothers," according to a 2011 memoir by Styron's daughter, Alexandra.
Wallace called his 1984 book, written with Gary Paul Gates, "Close Encounters." He described it as "one mostly lucky man's encounters with growing up professionally."
In 2005, he brought out his memoir, "Between You and Me."

Among those interviewing him about the book was son Chris, for "Fox News Sunday." His son asked: Does he understand why people feel a disaffection from the mainstream media?
"They think they're wide-eyed commies. Liberals," the elder Wallace replied, a notion he dismissed as "damned foolishness."

Wallace was born Myron Wallace on May 9, 1918, in Brookline, Mass. He began his news career in Chicago in the 1940s, first as radio news writer for the Chicago Sun and then as reporter for WMAQ. He started at CBS in 1951.
He was married four times. In 1986, he wed Mary Yates Wallace, the widow of his close friend and colleague, Ted Yates, who had died in 1967. Besides his wife, Wallace is survived by his son, Chris, a stepdaughter, Pauline Dora, and stepson Eames Yates.

Rest iN Peace Coach Joe Avezzano Of The Dallas Cowboys

Share

Joe Avezzano, who won three Super Bowl rings as a Dallas Cowboys special teams coach and was known for his engaging personality, died Thursday in Italy. He was 68.

Avezzano reportedly was working out on a treadmill when he suffered a heart attack. He was recently hired as the head coach of the Milano Seamen of the Italian Football League.

Avezzano was the Cowboys' special teams coach from 1990 through 2002. He was named the NFL's special teams coach of the year three times during that span but wasn't retained when Bill Parcells took over as coach in 2003.

He worked for Barry Switzer for four seasons with the Cowboys, including the franchise's last Super Bowl title season. When Switzer thinks of his old friend, football usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Switzer thinks of Avezzano strumming a guitar and belting out country songs.

"Joe would rather have been a country western music star or on-stage performer than a football coach if he had a choice," Switzer said. "Joe did a great job coaching, was highly ambitious and a hard worker, but Joe always thought he could sing. I got a kick out of that."

Switzer laughed as he recalled a party he hosted after a Cowboys game once that included Charley Pride and a couple of other country stars as guests. It didn't take long before the music started, with Avezzano right in the middle of the group.

"They were all over there pickin' and singin'," Switzer said. "That's what Joe loved to do -- pick and sing. That was his passion."

Avezzano served as head coach of the Arena Football League's Dallas Desperados for the next two seasons after leaving the Cowboys before a three-season stint as the Oakland Raiders' special teams coach. He also was Oregon State's coach from 1980 to 1984.

Avezzano remained a popular figure in Dallas-Fort Worth. He worked as a radio and TV analyst and owned Coach Joe's Hat Tricks, a bar and restaurant in suburban Lewisville.

"Joe Avezzano was a very special part of our Dallas Cowboys family and our organization's history. He was also a wonderful father, husband and friend," team owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. "No one enjoyed life more than Joe, and no one that I know had a greater appreciation for the people that he loved and the lives that he touched. ... He was an original. There was no one else like him."

Avezzano is survived by his wife, Diann, and his son, Tony
