Atlanta, GA (AHN) - Professional boxer Vernon Forrest was shot and killed as the victim in a reported carjacking attempt Saturday night in Atlanta.

Forrest was 38 and a former WBC super welterweight champion.

Police told WSB TV Forrest was approached by two still unidentified men when he stopped at gas station to check the air in his Jaguar's tires.

The incident occurred on McDaniel Street near Fulton Street in the Mechanicsville community.

Forrest was a prolific boxer who notched a pair of wins over Sugar Shane Mosley and was a member of the 1992 Olympic team.

He racked up a 41-3 boxing record with one no contest.

In all, 29 of his victories were by knockout.
